Hex nuts are six-sided, internally threaded fasteners, mated with bolts, studs, screws and other externally threaded products. The addition of the hex nut ensures that the bolt, etc., stays in place.

The hex jam nut is thinner than the standard (finished) hex nut. It is tightened against the work surface, with a standard hex nut tightened behind it to keep it firmly in place.
